to adjust the width of the message pm message area :

admin cp -> styles and templates : click style manager :
in the drop down menu for the style you wish to change choose -> styleVars :
:change this setting :
Message Area Width (pixels)
(This value allows you to specify the width in pixels of the text box used for all message posting in vBulletin)
